Complementarity, sets and numbers

Niels Bohr's term‘complementarity' has been used by several authors to capture the essential aspects of the cognitive and epistemological development of scientific and mathematical concepts. In this paper we will conceive of complementarity in terms of the dual notions of extension and intension of mathematical terms. A complementarist approach is induced by the impossibility to define mathematical reality independently from cognitive activity itself. R. Thom, in his lecture to the Exeter International Congress on Mathematics Education in 1972,stated ‘‘the real problem which confronts mathematics teaching is not that of rigor,but the problem of the development of‘meaning’, of the ‘existence' of mathematical objects'. Student's insistence on absolute ‘meaning questions’, however,becomes highly counter-productive in some cases and leads to the drying up of all creativity. Mathematics is, first of all,an activity, which, since Cantor and Hilbert, has increasingly liberated itself from metaphysical and ontological agendas. Perhaps more than any other practice,mathematical practice requires acomplementarist approach, if its dynamics and meaning are to be properly understood. The paper has four parts. In the first two parts we present some illustrations of the cognitive implications of complementarity. In the third part, drawing on Boutroux' profound analysis, we try to provide an historical explanation of complementarity in mathematics. In the final part we show how this phenomenon interferes with the endeavor to explain the notion of number. Subitisation in Number Tasks in Children with Down Syndrome

ABSTRACT

This paper presents results from the development of a sequence for teaching/learning number concepts for children with Down syndrome that is adapted to their cognitive characteristics and to certain traits of their executive functioning. The mathematical objective is to promote subitising during the initial number learning in order to develop cardinality, composition-decomposition and number facts. We outline activities with different materials and resources, supported by the use of augmentative communication. We present the results of a case study involving two children with Down syndrome (7 and 8 years of age) who followed the proposed intervention for one academic year. The results indicated a different tendency when using the subitising strategy in both children and also depended on the physical arrangement of the objects to be counted. The benefits found were the children’s flexibility in using subitising and counting in numerical activities and the spontaneous use of augmentative communication.  相似文献

通过对1990年和2000年两次人口普查统计数据的对比分析发现：随着民族教育事业的发展，各民族的平均受教育年限都有所提高，各民族内部教育更加平等了；而在各民族之间，教育不平等程度则有所扩大，虽然扩大的幅度不大，但应该引起有关决策部门的注意。  相似文献

采用文献资料法、实验法、数理统计法, 对湖南省长沙市海东青健身俱乐部参加3 个月以上有氧健身操运动的25 - 55 岁的成年女性会员, 持续前后身体形态的变化的测试, 来了解有氧健身操对成年女性身体形态的影响。结果表明, 经过3 个月的锻炼, 成年女性的体重、腹部皮褶厚度、体脂重FAT (W) 和体重指数(BMI) 、指数胸围、腰围均有一定程度的减少; 身高、臀围、大腿围、小腿围、腰臀比(WHR) 指数并无明显变化。  相似文献
